Cities are enormous consumers of electricity. The highest electricity consumption takes place in cities and this consumption is responsible for approximately 30% of CO2 emissions to atmosphere.
In a context in which only 32% of the electricity consumed is generated using renewable energies and around 14% of the energy supplied is lost during transmission in urban distribution networks, the great energy challenges facing 21st century cities is clear:
To improve energy efficiency in electricity grid transmission and distribution.
To achieve greater integration of renewable energies into the electricity grid.
To reduce CO2 emissions to atmosphere resulting from electricity consumption.
To involve the final consumer in smart use of energy.
